Woman experiencing dental pain

Severe dental pain can be debilitating; it can stop you from doing your job, or simply enjoying your day. There are many causes of tooth pain. Some are minor, but others may lead to unnecessary complications. In rare cases, tooth pain can indicate a serious condition. It is important to call Dr. Jared Wu and Dr. Philip Kress as soon as possible so that our practice can arrange for you to come in and have the problem diagnosed and treated.

Below are some common causes of dental emergencies:

A toothache, also known as reversible or irreversible pulpitis refers to the inflammation of a tooth’s inner tissue called pulp, which is often caused by a bacterial infection. Generally, this is due to a cavity or decay that has impacted the pulp. Symptoms include sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks, generalized pain in the mouth or jaw, and possibly the development of an abscess. In the case of minor pulpitis, it may be possible to fill the cavity and save the tooth. In more advanced cases of pulpitis, root canal treatment or extraction is necessary. Pulpitis can be the result of trauma or periodontitis (pyorrhea) which is a condition that is often localized to the soft tissue of the mouth but can indicate an underlying disease process. Antibiotics are often necessary. If you suspect that you have an infection, call our office without delay.

Abscessed Tooth

An abscess is a painful infection in or around the root of a tooth and is usually due to extensive tooth decay. Symptoms may include fever, pain, redness, swelling, and a bitter or foul taste in the mouth.

Dental Trauma

A loosened, broken, or dislodged tooth is always a dental emergency. Always look for broken pieces or the avulsed tooth. Rinse your mouth and the tooth with warm water, but do not remove any fragments from the tooth. Try to reinsert the tooth, making sure it is facing the correct way. If it is not possible to reinsert, store the tooth and any fragments in milk, saliva, or water with a pinch of salt to preserve these until you arrive at our office for your emergency appointment.

Broken Restorations

If permanent crowns, braces, or other dental appliances break or become damaged, this can also be an emergency, and you need to be examined as soon as possible. Failure to do can contribute to issues down the road.
